Web3 gaming has a credibility problem it largely earned — a wave of projects in the early 2020s prioritized token mechanics over actual gameplay, and players noticed. The titles still standing in 2026 tend to share one trait: they were built as games first, with the blockchain layer supporting the experience rather than being the entire pitch.
Treat the game like a game, not a token launch
The single biggest predictor of whether a Web3 game survives past its launch hype is whether it's fun to play with the token mechanics turned off, hypothetically. We built a top-down wave shooter where players earn convertible tokens through actual combat performance, and a multiplayer horse racing game where players bet and race using NFT-based horses — in both cases, the core loop (shooting, racing) had to work as a game on its own before the economic layer made sense as a reason to keep playing.
Real-time multiplayer changes your technical requirements
Live blockchain games with real-money stakes can't tolerate the lag or desync tolerance that a casual mobile game might get away with. Supporting up to 100 simultaneous live spectators in a real-time horse race, for instance, meant building on a networking framework designed specifically for competitive real-time multiplayer rather than a general-purpose backend, because betting outcomes need to feel fair and instantaneous to hold player trust.
Wallet integration is a UX problem before it's a technical one
Connecting a crypto wallet is still one of the biggest drop-off points in Web3 game onboarding. Supporting multiple wallet types and chains widens your addressable player base, but every additional step in that flow is a place to lose a player who was otherwise interested. The teams that get this right treat wallet connection as core onboarding UX, not as a technical checkbox handled once and forgotten.
Live operations don't stop because it's "just" a Web3 game
A live game economy needs the same ongoing attention as any other live-service title — tiered community structures, AI-driven content like quests, and continuous balancing of the token economy against gameplay rewards. A blockchain game that launches and then goes quiet on updates tends to see its economy and player base erode together, regardless of how solid the initial mechanics were.
What this means if you're considering a Web3 project
The studios still building credibly in this space treat blockchain as one system among many — multiplayer, economy, UX, live ops — rather than the headline feature. If the game wouldn't hold up as a game without the tokens, the tokens won't save it either.
